When God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, no one was more surprised than Moses. He thought the Lord must surely have the wrong man. He tried to convince God that he was not qualified and that he needed to pick someone else for the job. You can read Moses story in Exodus 3 and 4.

Moses asked God why he had chosen him to go lead the people. He also wanted to know what made God think that the people would listen to him. God heard his questions but answered his fear when he told him that he would go with him.

That should have been enough for Moses, but he was just getting started with the excuses. Next, he asked God who he should he say had sent him. God answer was simple. He told Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14) (NIV)

There is so much power in these words spoken by God. He was telling Moses whatever you need I’m it. I will supply your every need. With one sentence he was equipping Moses for his calling. He was giving him the authority to be a leader. He was basically saying to Moses in today’s terms, “I’ve got this.”

Moses still was having a hard time believing that he could do this. I wonder if Moses was doing what we do so often and already think of his next excuse rather than listening to what God was telling him. God counter every excuse with a solution and Moses finally did what he should have done in the first place and followed God’s plan for his life.

We give Moses a hard time about his excuses, but the truth is we’ve all got them. It sounds foolish to us that Moses would argue with God, that he would question the great I AM. It is equally as foolish when we do it. The answer for us is the same as it was for Moses, we need to trust that God knows what he is doing when he calls us and believe him when he says, “I’ve got this.” Yes, he is the I am for anything he calls us to do but none more important than when he calls us to accept him as Savior. He’s got the answer for our salvation too.

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) (NIV)
