Potts Pages - When You Want to Fly Away
February 03, 2017

Have you ever felt stuck? It’s not a good feeling. You feel like you can’t move on from where you are right now. Writers get that feeling often staring at the blank page. I think we all feel that from time to time we would like to just get out of our present circumstances and do something new and different.

There are times when God will call us to something new, but often God has us just where we need to be and even when we can’t see the reason we need to stay where we are. So, how do we deal with it when our soul gets the urge to run but God has not released us? I think we can learn a lesson from the Psalmist

David felt stuck in his problems and told God all about it in Psalm 55. In verse three he said he was overwhelmed by troubles. He goes on to talk about his enemies were after him and that he was living in fear. So much so that he wished he had the wings of a dove so he could fly away. He wanted to escape. He then prays for the Lord to confuse the enemy so they couldn’t get to him.

David then confesses that his known enemies weren’t the worse part of his trouble but that he had been betrayed by a friend. As you can well, imagine he was hurt and angry. He continues to pray a, “please get them Lord” prayer for a while. But then his prayer changes.

He begins to change his focus from the situation he is into the God who is there with him. He states his faith that the Lord will rescue him and deal with his enemies. He has placed his trust in God and knows that God will take care of him. This is not the last time that David has to go through this process of giving his troubles to God and trusting him, but for this time he has been able to calm down and stay when he wanted to run.

From this Psalm, we learned that when we have the urge to fly away and escape that we need to call out to God. Let him fight the battle with our enemies. Give our deepest hurts and betrayals to him and trust him with it all. It’s all about focus.
