We complain a lot, especially around Christmas time, about the quality of things we buy. Merchandise doesn’t seem to be as sturdy or made with as good of materials as it used to be. We talk about how easily things are broken or fall apart on their own. Even if we do find something that is well made, we know that it will eventually wear out.

Now in the age of technology, we are constantly having to update. It seems there is always a newer, better product on the market. Things that we thought were high tech a few years ago are obsolete now. It is exhausting trying to keep up.

Aren’t you glad that God isn’t like that? He never wears out or falls apart. You will never have to upgrade to a better God. He will never be out of date or behind the times. He is as relevant today as when time began.

When the prophet Isaiah foretold of the birth of Jesus, he said, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and he shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) (NIV)

It seems a little strange that this baby that was to be born would be called Everlasting Father. This relates to his deity. Jesus said in John 10:30, “I and my Father are one.” So before Jesus was born as a baby he was recognized as never ending, never fading, never irrelevant God.

Not only is God himself everlasting, so is his love. We can never do anything to make God not love us. His love is not because of what we do or don’t do. He loves us because it is what he does. It is who he is. Our everlasting father promised to love us with an everlasting love. The greatest expression of that everlasting love was the baby born on that first Christmas. As you celebrate this Christmas, celebrate a gift that will never need replacing.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love, and I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3) (NIV)
