Potts Pages - Legacy of Faith
September 08, 2015
In College, learning to write for the school newspaper, one of our assignments was to write our own obituary. The purpose was to teach us writing skills need for newspaper style of writing. I’ll admit there wasn’t too much philosophical thinking that went into it. But, if you think about the content instead of the style of writing, we all want to be remembered for something.
When the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy to encourage him to be strong in his faith and to keep sharing the gospel. He told Timothy that he knew he came from a legacy of faith “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” (2 Timothy 1:5) (NIV) Isn’t that a wonderful way for Timothy’s grandmother Lois to be remembered? She passed on her faith to her daughter and her grandson.
Becoming a Christian and having a relationship with Jesus is a personal decision. We can’t just say we are Christians because our grandparents or parents believed. But, that decision is so much easier if we have a legacy to look back on and set that foundation for us. Then in turn, we carry on that foundation for our children and grandchildren.
Imagine with me for a moment that somebody is writing a letter to your grandchild and complete this sentence. I remember your grandmother/grandfather and the thing I remember the most about them is ___________________. Let it be said of us that the first thing someone remembers about us is our faith.
Sunday, September, 13th is Grandparents Day. Let your grandparents know that you appreciate them. If you grandparents are no longer here. Spend some time with someone of grandparent age and learn from their wisdom. They have stories to tell and need ears to listen.
In 2 Timothy, Paul began his letter by addressing Timothy as his dear son. Not only did Timothy have his family but he also had Paul investing into his life. Our legacy does not only have to be to our children and grandchildren but to anyone in the generations behind us.
Prayerfully commit to leaving a legacy of faith for whether you write it, or someone else does it for you, your obituary will one day be written.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7) (NIV)
