November 04, 2016

I would like for you to think with me today about one of the names that we hear used for God. That name is Waymaker. The most basic use of the name comes from John 14:6 (NIV), “Jesus answered and said I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man comes to the father but by me.” God sent Jesus to earth to die for our sins to make a way for us to get to the father and for us to be able to spend eternity with him.

The Waymaker is also at work in our lives on a daily basis. I looked up the word waymaker, and it is defined as one who goes before or a precursor. God was the Waymaker for Noah and his family from the flood. He was the Waymaker for the Israelites by going before them as a cloud by day and pillar of fire by night and by parting the red sea for Moses to lead them through on dry ground. He was the Waymaker for Ruth by providing Boaz to be her kinsman redeemer. He made a way out of the fiery furnace for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. God also showed himself as the Waymaker when he made a way for Daniel to escape the lion’s den and when he made a way for Paul and Silas to get out of jail.

God was the precursor in all of these situations. He was already there and knew the way out. Not only does precursor mean one who goes before but the dictionary says that a precursor is a harbinger. I’ll have to admit that I had no clue what harbinger meant until I looked it up. It means a herald or one who goes before, but it also adds that it is one who goes before to provide secure lodgings.

Isaiah 32:18 (NIV) says, “My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes and in undisturbed places of rest.” God wants his people to live in peace and security. What situation in your life is causing your rest to be disturbed? Is there an unpeaceful situation in your life that you are stuck in the middle of and see no way out? The Waymaker is already there. He knows all about it. Ask him to take care of it and make a way for you today. Nothing is impossible or too hard for him.

“See I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:19) (NIV)
