October 06, 2016

In recent days we have heard about the devastation that hurricanes can bring. Many of the places being hit are being wiped out because they have no strong buildings. Their houses consist of materials that can’t stand against the forceful winds and pouring rains. The people in these areas have nowhere to go that is safe.

We also know of situations where tornados and hurricanes have hit areas that did have strong buildings but found that they were just not strong enough. Even our twin towers, with their reinforced metal, could not withstand being attacked.

Often after a calamity has struck, we talk about warning signs. With weather disasters, they are usually predicted hours and sometimes days ahead so that preparations can be made. Then there are other times when there is little warning that something is about to happen as in some instances of shootings and other violence. Many times loved ones of those who carry out these horrendous acts say there were no signs to predict their behavior.

Life catastrophes come like that too. Some we see coming and try to prepare ourselves for and others strike us with no warning. Aren’t you glad we have a strong tower to run to?  Proverbs 18:10 tells us “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it and is safe.” You may be thinking that this verse doesn’t apply to you because you don’t feel very righteous. None of us are righteous on our own, but If we have a relationship with Jesus and he is our Savior, then he is our righteousness. If you don’t know him as Savior, then that is first reason to run to the strong tower. Just call on his name and confess your sins and he will forgive you and welcome you in.

If you have run to that strong tower for salvation, he is still there for refuge from the storms of life. He is there when you feel the forceful rains. He is there when you are caught in the downpour of problems. He is there when the enemy attacks. You will be safe in him. If you are thinking that bad things still happen to those that claim the name of the Lord, you are right. He is there to be our strength through those things, and if we are not safe in this life, we will be safe in the next. When we leave this life, we will be in the strong tower forever.

One of the most famous towers in our world today is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Did you know that it has been leaning since it was first constructed? The reason it leans is one side of the ground under it was too soft to build a sure foundation.

Our strong tower will never fall nor will he ever lean. The foundation is sure, and the tower is fortified.  He will always be there for us. So if you feel the winds and the rains stirring or you hear the enemy coming start running for the tower. I promise the door is open.

“He will be a sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; a fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.” (Isaiah 33:6) (NIV)
