Potts Pages - The Cure for Soul Tiredness
April 29, 2016
Have you ever tried to lift a box so wide that you just cannot get a grip on it by yourself? If you have then, you know the relief when someone comes along and grabs the other side. Maybe, you’ve tried to move something so heavy that you couldn’t budge it alone, but it becomes manageable when someone helps you.
We all face situations that are just too wide for us to get a grasp on by ourselves. We just can’t see the big picture, so we are awkwardly trying to find a way to get a hold of our circumstances; we also know that there are times life gets heavy. We are burdened down by the weight of our problems until we can barely move. We get soul tired and weary in spirit. We need help. The good news is we have help.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) (NIV)
Jesus tells us to come to Him when we can’t do it alone. He asks us to be yoked to Him. A yoke was a common object in Biblical times that is still used today. It connects the oxen together so that could pull at the same time. It was often heavy, burdensome and although necessary, not very comfortable, for the animals. But, God promises that His yoke is easy, and His burden is light.
He wants to walk beside us and help us pull the weights of life. He wants us to learn from him. That means that he is teaching us as we go. If we follow his example, he will stay with us, and we never have to pull alone. Then, when we have handled all we can, He promises to give us rest and not just any rest but rest for our souls.
Do you have a case of soul tiredness? He bids you come. He has the cure.
