Just as nature has seasons, so do our lives. Some seasons, we seem to just glide along for a while with all going well. Other seasons bring a crisis and put us in survival mode. Sometimes, we feel confident and able to handle what comes our way. There is yet another season when there is no major crisis but we are busy, and things are coming at us faster than we can handle.
The latter is the season that can leave us feeling worn out and less than competent. So, what are some practical ways to deal with those times when things are flying at us in every direction, and we are hitting very few of them.
First of all, pray and ask God to show you which things to swing at. As always our priority should be God first, family then other commitments. Make a list of all the things you need to get done. Be sure to put you time with God on your schedule. Then add the important and time sensitive items next on the list. If you have trouble figuring out what should take priority, play the “what if” game. “What if this doesn’t get done? What will happen then?
Don’t neglect family time. Spend quality, full attention on, time with those you love. Be sure to take care of yourself. Rest, eat properly and take time out to enjoy a chat with a friend, a funny video or a favorite TV show. If we are feeling good and more relaxed, we are more productive.
Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself for tasks not completed. Move them to the next day and try again. Start each day with fresh instructions from God. Ask him to order your steps and concentrate on pleasing him and him only.
“Direct my footsteps according to your word.” (Psalm 119:133) (NIV)
