March 09, 2016
I have a very special guest blogger this week. My daughter Jessa Potts is a high school senior. She will attend Union University in Jackson, Tennessee in the fall and plans on majoring in graphic design. She is an avid reader and holds leadership roles in school, church, and her community. Please prayerfully continue to read her blog.
Crooked Sticks
This past weekend I attended Disciple Now, a youth event at my church. As a senior, it was my last one as a student and one of my favorites. The speaker and worship leader were amazing, and they were great leaders for the weekend. The theme of the weekend was SELFLESS. This is a topic that I continue to work on in my life
The dictionary definition of selfless is having little or no concern for oneself. In today’s time, being selfless is the opposite of what the world wants us to do. The world says “Every man for himself,” It’s a dog eat dog world,” “Do whatever it takes to get ahead” This is not the message of the Bible. Jesus came to show us the true meaning of being selfless.
Our speaker continued with the question “Are we putting obstacles in our life to keep us from Christ?” It made me think of all the obstacles I let distract me from Christ. There are so many things that can become a barrier between us and our relationship with God, like technology, not prioritizing time, and getting caught up in thoughts.
The great thing about Christ is He forgives when we repent. One point our speaker emphasized was to consume the Word. If we are in the Word, we are available to see where God is working, and we are transformed when we soak in the Word. Once Christ transforms us, He can do unimaginable work through us. Even if you don’t feel good enough to be used, God can work through anyone who is selfless to Him. As our speaker said, God uses crooked sticks to make straight lines.
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:1-2) (NIV)
