Potts Pages - Directionally Challenged or Challenging Directions?
August 11, 2015

I have always been directionally challenged. In other words, I can get lost as a goose.

When we were in high school, my best friend and I were taking a friend home who lived, as we say in the south, in the boonies. It was at night after a school function, so it was dark, by the way, the boonies didn’t have street lights. After our friend had got out of the car, we started driving praying we were going in the right direction. The more we drove the funnier the situation got. I think we chose laughter instead of fear.

When we were about to get anxious that we had made a wrong turn, we saw it. There it was! Finally, something we recognized seeing while driving to the friend’s house. Our beacon in the night was a dead animal, who had met his demise on the side of the road. Now while we felt pity for the animal we expressed our gratitude for his sacrifice and kept driving back to civilization.

It is very uncomfortable and anxious to lose direction while driving but even more so to lose direction spiritually.  We wonder if we are making the right decisions. We get more fearful and unsure the further we go.

Any number of things can cause a loss of spiritual direction.

Being easily distracted
Focusing on the wrong thing
Driving aimlessly without getting clear directions first
There are steps we can take to get our direction back.

Pray- I know it seems that this is always the answer to spiritual questions. The reason it seems so is because it is the answer. A simple prayer can get us back where it needs to be.
“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”  (Psalm 143:10 NIV)
Keep your focus.

“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.” (Proverbs 4:25 NIV)

Ask for directions before you start your journey and take your light with you.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105 NIV)

God, his word and keeping our focus on him will guide us out of the darkest of boonies that we may find ourselves. Instead of directionally challenged, we will be challenged to be our best following his directions for our lives.

So glad you didn’t say God is our GPS. (Smile).

Sue, several members of our Christian Poets & Writers group on Facebook mentioned lack of focus as a hindrance to their writing, so your post reminding us to focus first on God is timely. I’ll highlight this on the Christian Poets & Writers blog - http://www.christianpoetsandwriters.com.

Sue, your blog brought many memories of similar circumstances; however, I"ve never used a carcus as a reference point. Like the way you brought our attention to the possibility of spiritual lostness.. I’d like to talk with you about possibilities of expanding your ministry.

A friend of mine sings when she gets directionally challenged. Thanks for a great reminder.

Yes Sue, Jimmy and I have been lost on many occasions! I’m so grateful that God has always been there to help get us back on track. Thank you for those encouraging scripture verses
