Potts Pages - Are You Building Cathedrals
January 27, 2016
Who do you work for? Your first instinct might be to give me your boss’ name or if you are a writer you might tell me that you work for yourself but is that as far as it goes?
There is an old anonymous quote that says, “Two stonecutters were asked what they were doing. The first said, “I am cutting this stone into blocks.” The second replied, “I’m on a team that is building a cathedral.”
Wow! What a different perspective. How different each of them must have felt waking up in the morning getting ready for work. How different each of them must have felt when they got their paycheck. How different each of them must have felt when the job was completed.
So would you say something like, “I’m just writing an article” or “I’m just filing these papers” or even “I’m just teaching math today.” How different would our life be if we said, “I’m writing this article to encourage someone or “I’m using my organizational skills to help my company accomplish its goals” or “I’m preparing future leaders to be their best.”
Are you cutting stones into blocks? In and of itself there is nothing wrong with that kind of a job. Those jobs are necessary. While there is nothing wrong with a job like this, it would tend to get monotonous and boring if that is all we are doing.
When we think of cathedrals, we think of a beautiful, artistic building, built with the best materials and workmanship to bring glory to God and enhance worship. Why should whatever we are building be any different?
The choice is ours we can work, or we can do Kingdom work by doing our best and seeking to honor the Lord in all that we do.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, and not for human masters.” (Colossians 3:23)
