Last summer my family and I went to a very touristy place for vacation. We enjoyed the sights and the shows but as always one of our favorite things was finding new places to eat.
One of the restaurants we chose was a barbeque style place. We discovered by looking at the menu that their selections contained large portions and more than we were up for that particular night. So we chose a sampler platter that we could share. It came with pulled barbeque, ribs and smoked sausages along with the usual sides. Our order came, we ate our fill, and everything was over the top delicious.
On this same trip, on our shopping day, we picked a restaurant for lunch that was close by. We placed our order, and when our food came, we all rated it average except for one thing. They served the most scrumptious cornbread we had ever tasted, and cornbread is not something that usually excites me. I can take it or leave it. We decided then and there, that if we ever came back to this vacation spot that we would come to this restaurant and just order cornbread.
The first restaurant served a feast, and it was all good. The second should have showcased their cornbread.
Do you ever feel like all you have to serve is cornbread and everybody else is sharing their feast? The truth is that we can feel pretty inadequate when we start comparing ourselves to others. It is also true that we all have cornbread, something that we are talented and gifted to do.
As writers, we know the feeling when we look at those that have multiple books or articles in numerous genres, and our cornbread is in one genre or for a small publication. We are not all designed to cook a barbecue feast. We have to find and be faithful in what we have been gifted to do.
Make sure you have the recipe to make your cornbread scrumptious. Get the best ingredients by learning from others and practice honing your craft until you have people wanting more. Then leave the results up to God.
“Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.” (Galatians 6:4-5 MSG)
So, what’s your cornbread?
