Potts Pages - Gifts Without a Bow
December 01, 2015
As December begins, so do holiday traditions. One of those traditions for me, as for most people, is watching Christmas movies. Yes, they are sappy, feel good forms of entertainment but they can also teach us some important lessons. There are always great new movies coming out, but you can’t beat the classics. One of my favorites is “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
In this movie, George Bailey gets to see what life would have been like for his loved ones if he had never been born. After this experience, he gains a new appreciation for life. George ran through the streets of Bedford Falls with gratefulness and a new perspective. The things that became mundane and a drudgery took on a whole new excitement as he looked at them with fresh eyes. Most of all, he learned to cherish his family and friends as he realized that they cherished him.
Most of us, haven’t had an eye opener like George, and we tend to take life for granted. God placed us where we are for a reason. We have a purpose, and he has a plan. He gave us the friends and family that he wanted us to have.
We are unique and “fearfully and wonderfully made,” Not only, did God give you the people in your life that you need he gave you to them. What an awesome thought! God wanted someone like you to be part of his world. He wanted someone like you to have a relationship with and to be part of his family, too. No, I stand corrected he didn’t want someone like you. He wanted YOU! He wanted you when he created you, and he hasn’t changed his mind. He still wants you and loves you just as much today.
We tend to get bogged down in the drudgery of daily life and take for granted what we have. Look with fresh eyes today and realize that not all gifts have a bow. Each day is a gift. The people in your life are gifts. Where you are placed and what you are called to do are gifts.
Go now, run through your Bedford Falls and be grateful for God truly has blessed us with the gift of a wonderful life!
“He gives breath to everyone, life to everyone who walks the earth.” (Isaiah 42:5) (NLT)
