Potts Pages - Uncover the Gift
October 06, 2015
When the topic of gifts and talents comes up, we usually start nervously shifting in our seat, feeling inadequate. We think that if we don’t have the “biggie” talents that first come to mind that we don’t have any at all. We spend more time focused on what we don’t have than what we do.
We long to have the gifts that are easily recognizable and come packaged with a big shiny bow on top. Often we forget that whatever the size of our talent we have it to bring glory to God and to help others. Sometimes the best gifts come in small packages with lots of tissue paper on top. Let’s see if we can uncover a gift or two.
Max Lucado, in his book, Cure for the Common Life: Living in Your Sweet Spot says, “When God gives an assignment, he also gives the skill. Study your skills, then, to reveal your assignment.” I know that sometimes God asks us to step out of our comfort zone but often he just wants us to use the things with which he has already equipped us. Answer the following questions and make a list of your answers to discover a few of your skills.
Why do your friends like you? I didn’t ask why they love you. I asked, “Why do they like you?” There is a difference. Why do people like to be around you? Are you the logical level headed one or are you the one who just naturally makes everybody laugh? How about your personality? Are you quiet and reflective or do you have the gift of gab? Are you always positive or are you more of a realist who needs a set plan of action?
What is something that you do that everyone seems to enjoy? Do you make the world’s best cookies or would you rather take a friend to lunch?
Would you rather play basketball with the neighborhood kids or checkers at the nursing home? These questions are just the tip of the iceberg. Keep making your list of personality traits and things you enjoy doing and then figure out how you can use them to bless others. Remember the greatest gift you can give someone is love. Somebody needs the gift of you. Ask God, “Who?”
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10) (NIV) Sue
